Welcome to the Shepshed Against Incinerator Group (SAIG) website.

Who are we?
The Group was formed to campaign against the proposal to build a Waste Incinerator at Newhurst Quarry Shepshed.  We believe that everyone has the right to breathe clean, fresh air, free from the toxins that would be emitted from an incinerator, should one be built.  The emissions would eventually fall to earth contaminating soil and polluting the environment.

By doing nothing you are agreeing to this proposal - you still have time to write a letter of protest - The Development Control and Regulatory Board (DCRB) is due to hold a special meeting to discuss the following item: Energy from Waste (Biffa) – Newhurst Quarry, Shepshed. This meeting was provisionally organised to take place on Wednesday 28 July 2010. This provisional date has now been changed; the new date for the special meeting of the DCRB has still to be confirmed.

What are we opposed to?
We are against the plan to build an incinerator at Newhurst Quarry Shepshed, here are just a few of the reasons:

  • Carbon Dioxide (Co2) will be the main emission from the very high flue stacks.  Incineration produces twice the Co2 per unit of power than energy produced from fossil fuels.
  • Increased heavy traffic transporting waste to the site and toxic fly ash away from the site

  • The toxic particles emitted from the site are harmful to health.  Even Biffa, who are planning to build this site, don't disagree that it is impossible to remove all particulates  - when I posed the question to the Biffa representative at the local consultation 'can you guarantee that there will never be any toxic accidents or incidents?'  I was told that it was impossible to guarantee that over the next 25 - 30 years (the time the Incinerator would be working) there would never be any sort of accident.

  • Possible reduction in the value of homes. -  I have already had an email from a resident who has had a buyer pull out of a sale due to the proposal.
  • The Incinerator will remove the potential for the site to be utilised as a leisure facility which would increase the number of visitors to Shepshed and, in turn, benefit local businesses.
  • The incinerator would emit gases containing nitrogen oxide, acidic gasses, dust, metal compounds and dioxides.  Although these may be in small amounts, over time they will be inhaled and enter the blood stream, eventually falling to earth and contaminating soil and vegetationShepshed has a large number of allotment owners who pride themselves on their organic produce - who knows what the impact of this fallout will be?

  • Leicestershire has one of the best recycling records in the Country.  Waste Incineration would discourage recycling.  Incinerators need caloric waste to burn - most of the stuff we currently recycle.  Incinerators are expensive to shut down, so they need a constant supply of fuel - The County doesn't have enough waste to satisfy these requirements, so the plan is for Shepshed to become the dumping ground for waste from around the Country.
  • There are better, safer ways to dispose of rubbish.  These include plasma technology, autoclaves, mechanical/biological (like Biffa's plant in Beaumont Leys), and others.  see links for more information
  • Reports indicate that the toxins emitted from Incinerators has the greatest impact on infants and small children, the very people we should be protecting.

THE LOCATION: This incinerator will be built close to one of the largest residential conurbations in the County.
